How to Recruit Top Talent in an Organization

One effective way to recruit top talent is through behavioral interviews, which focus on measuring competencies. Talented employees excel in their work by displaying effective behaviors. Behavioral interviews ask candidates to explain how they have behaved or would behave in specific situations, rather than simply observing their behavior.

Developing Behavioral Interviews:Creating a behavioral interview for a role requires input from executives, as they are familiar with both positive and negative employee behaviors. One popular method for developing these interviews is the Critical Incident Technique, which includes the following steps:

  1. Observation: The supervisor regularly observes an employee’s positive and negative behaviors in their role. A consultant can assist if needed.
  2. Identify Critical Behaviors: The HR specialist and supervisor identify key behaviors that contribute to or detract from performance.
  3. Build the Interview: The HR specialist creates interview questions based on the identified behaviors and develops an evaluation grid.
  4. Conduct Interviews: The interviews are then carried out to identify top talent.

Getting Started:

  1. Observe an employee in a selected position to identify critical behaviors.
  2. List three key competencies based on your observations, define them, and justify their importance for the role.
